IWelcome to one of the most incredible years your child will have in his/her school career! First grade is an exciting time as children embark upon new adventures in the world of learning. This is a year of important transitions, as well as one in which acquisition of new skills is accelerated.
During first grade, your child will learn the fundamentals of reading, explore the world of stories, add, subtract, and so much more. I hope to make your child's first grade experience a fun and exciting one, and I hope to instill a love of learning that will last throughout the years.
So much happens in first grade! Because of this, parents as well as children may have some apprehensions about what to expect. It is extremely important to keep in mind that we all build on small successes. Each child will progress at his/her own rate, acquiring skills as he/she is developmentally ready. Maintaining each child's self-esteem and building a secure foundation for future growth will always remain a priority in first grade. Here are some ways you can help:
*Celebrate your child's success, no matter how small it may seem. This will keep your child enthusiastic about learning and proud of their work!
*Look for and read our Class Virtual News. This will be sent to your provided e-mail each Sunday and will have important information for the next week to come.
*Familiarize yourself with our class Weebly, j1araki.weebly.com. It is full of resources that you can refer to throughout the year.
*Read to and with your child everyday, if possible. The more your child is exposed to language, the easier it will be for him/her to incorporate new skills in reading and writing in the classroom. Oral reading is an important skill that should be practiced daily.
*Be an active participant in your child’s home-learning by setting aside 20-30 minutes for one-to-one time with your child. Let him/her share their “Did you know?” and “I wonder…” statements. This will be a great opportunity for your child to explore, discover, create and share their learning with you and others. Be sure to mark the Home Learning calendar each day.
Though learning may "look" a little different this year due to Covid-19, you can rest assure that together we can make this the best year ever for your child. There may be a few bumps along the way as we navigate the unknowns, but I am confident that in the end your child will be ready to soar into 2nd grade next year!
You will also be getting an invitation to follow our class on SeeSaw. I will use this learning management platform to communicate with you. I can also be reached at [email protected].
*Please do not hesitate to call, or email me with ANY questions or concerns!
